HOMICIDE

A Cold Case
It was about 6 p.m. on a Friday evening — Halloween — October 31, 2014 when Samuel D. Johnson and a friend walked from the North Frayser Community Center, 2555 St. Elmo Avenue toward the friend’s house.

When they reached the intersection of Wellons Avenue and Glenalp Street in the north Memphis neighborhood Johnson was shot.

It is believed the gunfire came from one or more subjects in a nearby 2010 Mitsubishi Gallant. Johnson died a short time after arriving at the Methodist North Emergency Room.

Cold Case investigators with the Memphis Police Department are asking that any witnesses to the shooting, or anyone with information on who is responsible, to please step forward. Crime of the Week #33

October 30, 2020

HOMICIDE

The report of a one-car crash brought Memphis Police officers from the Tillman station to 1524 Tayner Street, just off Chelsea Avenue in the Douglass neighborhood, at 11:20 p.m. Tuesday October 27, 2020.

Arriving officers located a man lying across the front seat of a black Ford pickup. The vehicle had crashed into a fence. Memphis Fire Department paramedics arrived and pronounced the victim, Carl Garrison, dead on the scene from gunshot wounds.

Officers determined that Garrison was driving eastbound on Chelsea when he and his truck were struck by bullets. The truck veered from Chelsea and came to rest in the back yard of a house on Tayner. Two males were seen running from the scene.

Crime of the Week #32

October 23, 2020

HOMICIDE

It was five minutes after midnight on Sunday, May 24, 2015 when Memphis Police officers assigned to the downtown entertainment district responded to a shooting report on South Fourth Street, near Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. There they found in the street the body of Calvin Wilhite, who had been shot and killed.

Officers learned that the victim had been arguing with two males occupying a light green or gray four-door sedan. It is possible the vehicle was a mid-2000 Dodge Stratus, a Ford Taurus or similar model car.

The suspects were described as male blacks in their early- or mid-20s. The individual thought responsible for shooting Wilhite is described as having a small to medium build. He was wearing a white t-shirt and was sitting on the passenger door frame of the vehicle as it was moving when he fired the fatal shots.

A Cold Case
It was 4:45 in the afternoon, Wednesday October 7, 2020, when officers assigned to the Memphis Police Department’s Crump station responded to reports of a shooting in the 200 block of Adolphus just east of Third Street in South Memphis.

At the scene the officers found a shooting victim, Keshundra Fleming, had been transported by private vehicle to the Memphis Fire station on South Third Street nearby. There the victim died of her injuries and was pronounced dead.

Police learned that the victim was standing with several other people on Adolphus when a male suspect drove up in a red vehicle with a white hood and opened fire, striking Fleming.

HOMICIDE

A caller to 911 operators reported a woman lying on a city street at 3 a.m. October 1, 2020. The call quickly was referred to the Memphis Police Department’s Mt. Moriah station. Police responded to 3896 Lamar Avenue, outside a motel property near New Getwell Road.

Arriving officers found a woman later identified as Tammy Hawthorne in the roadway and suffering from injuries. She was unresponsive. Memphis Fire Department paramedics who also arrived pronounced her dead on the scene.

The victim had been shot. After she was shot Hawthorne ran across Lamar screaming for help and then collapsed. A suspect was seen in a small silver four-door sedan.

Crime of the Week #29

September 25, 2020

HOMICIDE

A report of shots fired at 6:52 a.m. Monday, September 21, 2020 brought Memphis Police officers from the Airways station to the 1700 block of Preston Street in south Memphis.

When they arrived, the officers found a man slumped down in a chair on the front porch of a house. Herman Wright had been shot more than once and was unresponsive. Memphis Fire Department paramedics arrived and pronounced Wright dead on the scene.

Crime of the Week #28

September 11, 2020

HOMICIDE

Reports of a shooting brought Raines station Memphis Police officers to a Marathon station at 3885 Elvis Presley Boulevard in Whitehaven at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 2020. The officers found Demetrius Robinson when they arrived. He was suffering from a gunshot wound. Robinson was rushed to Regional One Medical Center in critical condition. He later died.

Police have determined that the victim had been talking with subjects in a black vehicle at the gas station when Robinson began struggling with one of the vehicle’s occupants. Someone fired a gun from the vehicle as it drove away, heading south on Elvis Presley.

September 4, 2020

HOMICIDE

Memphis Police officers were dispatched from the Airways Station to respond to the report of a shooting at 10:39 p.m. Thursday, August 27, 2020. They arrived in the 2700 block of Burns Avenue, just west of Lamar Avenue in South Memphis. They found Demarcus Drinkwater inside a silver Lexus ES 350, suffering from gunshot wounds.

Memphis Fire Department paramedics also arrived and pronounced Drinkwater dead at the scene. Officers determined that the victim was in his vehicle when shots were fired by one or more assailants. Crime of the Week #26

August 28, 2020

HOMICIDE

It was 1:47 a.m. when Memphis Police Officers were called to a shooting in the 3200 block of Morning View Drive, just west of Tchulahoma Road in the Parkway Village area. At the scene the officers found two young men who were suffering from gunshot wounds.

Tavarious Jones, 20, and Ladarious Scott, 23, were transported to Regional One Medical Center by paramedics. Scott was treated and released but Jones died. Crime of the Week #25

August 21, 2020

HOMICIDE

A shooting report was logged at 6:21 p.m. Friday, August 14, 2020 at the Memphis Police Department’s Ridgeway station. Officers were dispatched to 4334 Falcon Drive in the Westwood neighborhood of south Memphis. At the scene officers found two victims of gunshot wounds in a 2006 Mercedes.

One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The second was transported to Regional One Hospital where he later died. Officers determined that Quinterius Simmons and Darrin Wilson were sitting in the car when shots were fired. Two suspects were seen running from the area.
