October 8, 2021

HOMICIDE

The report of a shooting brought Memphis Police officers from the Mt. Moriah Station to the 4800 block of Summerland Avenue, just south of American Way at 5:30 a.m. Monday, October 4, 2021.

The officers arrived and found two people who had been shot several times. Patrick Garnier and Akara Williams were pronounced dead on the scene in another apparent home invasion.

The initial investigation revealed that two male suspects forced their way in the home intending to rob the victims. After shots were fired the suspects fled the scene in a small dark-colored SUV or crossover vehicle.

September 24, 2021

HOMICIDE

Airways Station Memphis Police officers were dispatched to Discount Muffler and Brakes shop, 2597 Lamar Avenue, at 1:05 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2021 to investigate a shooting report. At the scene the officers found a man lying on the lobby floor and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim, Derrick Johnson, was pronounced dead at the scene by Memphis Fire Department personnel. Police officers determined that Johnson was inside the lobby of the business when a male dressed in red from head to foot entered and began shooting at him. The suspect then fled southbound from the business on Callis Street.

September 17, 2021

HOMICIDE

Memphis Police officers were called to the Raines Mart at 5915 E. Raines Road at 6:20 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2021 to check on a shooting report. They found Cedric Bird lying on the ground. He had been shot several times. Arriving paramedics from the Memphis Fire Department pronounced the victim dead.

Officers learned that Bird had driven to the business and went inside. When he returned to his vehicle he was met by a male. Moments later the victim was shot multiple times as he attempted to get into his car. Bird fell to the pavement and the suspect ran behind the business.

The suspect was described as six feet tall, about 150 pounds, wearing dark clothing with a face covering and a white hat. Anyone with information that may help this murder investigation is asked to contact CrimeStoppers at 528-CASH (2274).

September 10, 2021

HOMICIDE

The call about a shooting was answered at 11:30 a.m. Monday, August 30, 2021 by a dispatcher at the Memphis Police Department’s Airways station. When officers arrived in the 500 block of E. Franks Avenue in south Memphis they found José Samuel Yanes-Guerra on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound.

The 18-year-old was transported to Regional One Hospital. He died a day later. Officers learned that the teenager had been working on the roof of his family’s home that morning. He had gone to his own vehicle when a suspect wearing a ski mask approached and shot him.

HOMICIDE

It was a few minutes before midnight on Sunday, August 15, 2021 when Memphis Police officers were dispatched from the Tillman Street Station to a shooting report in the 1000 block of Homer Street in the Berclair neighborhood.

On arrival the officers found Terrance Irby on the ground. He was unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Memphis Fire Dept. paramedics also arrived and pronounced Irby dead.

An initial investigation determined the shooting victim had gone outside his home. Witnesses heard an exchange of words then several gunshots. This murder investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to call CrimeStoppers at 528-CASH (2274).

August 20, 2021

HOMICIDE

Memphis Police officers stationed at Mt. Moriah responded to a shooting report at 4:28 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 2021. They arrived in the 1200 block of Robin Hood Lane in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood west of the University of Memphis to find a shooting victim.

Avit Taylor was lying across the front seat of a gray Nissan 300Z. He was unresponsive and pronounced dead when Memphis Fire Dept. paramedics soon arrived. Officers learned that Taylor had pulled to the curb and emerged from his vehicle when a black sedan pulled up. An unknown suspect began firing shots as Taylor got back into his vehicle. The sedan left going southbound on Robin Hood.

Crime of the Week #26

August 13, 2021

HOMICIDE

Memphis Police officers assigned to the North Main Street station were dispatched to reports of a shooting at CC’s Blues Club, 1427 Thomas Street, just off U.S. Route 51 in north Memphis. It was six minutes after midnight Sunday, July 25, 2021.

At the scene they found three patrons of the club on the ground. All three had been shot and were transported to Regional One Hospital. Antino Bradford, who had been shot in the back, died at the hospital.

Officers learned that the three had been standing in front of the business when several gunshots were fired from a vehicle. No other details were available. Anyone with information about this shooting and homicide is encouraged to call CrimeStoppers at 528-CASH (2274). All calls are anonymous.

A Cold Case
It was just after midnight Thursday, July 26, 2012 when Memphis Police were called to a shooting at 65 East Yates Road. Inside the residence, officers found the bodies of Anthony Conte, 26, and Robert Schmidt, 30. Both men had died of gunshot wounds.

Based on evidence at the scene, the MPD Homicide Bureau’s investigators believe the men were killed during a robbery. After hearing gunshots, witnesses described hearing a vehicle speeding away from the scene.

MPD Cold Case detectives are asking that witnesses call the Cold Case Hotline, 636-2653 and leave a message. An investigator will return the call as soon as possible. Even the smallest bit of information could be crucial to solving this double murder.

It was 8:10 p.m. on Monday, January 20, 2020 that Memphis Police officers at the Ridgeway Station responded to a call about a shooting in the 6800 block of Kirby Mills Cove in the Hickory Hills area. Inside a home the officers found two victims, Ashlynn Luckett, six years old, and LeQuan Boyd, 16.

The two had been shot in their own home in a drive-by shooting. Both were transported to hospitals but did not survive their injuries. Witnesses described a dark-colored SUV from which numerous gunshots were fired.

HOMICIDE

Memphis Police Officers stationed at the Tillman precinct responded to a call about a shooting in the 500 block of Belt Line Street, just east of Hollywood Street. It was 2:35 a.m., December 12, 2020.

The officers arrived to find two shooting victims, Travious Hawthorne and Alexander Stewart. They were inside a gray 2011 Chevrolet Malibu. Memphis Fire Dept. personnel arrived and pronounced the two men dead. Both had been hit by multiple bullets. Officers learned that a male wearing black clothing and a mask was seen running south on Belt Line toward Felix Avenue right after the shootings.
