HOMICIDE
Memphis Police Department officers from the Crump Precinct were in their squad car when they were flagged down by a pedestrian and told about a multi-car accident that had just happened in the 1800 block of Lamar Avenue at McLean Street in Midtown at 5:14 p.m. Sunday, October 6, 2019. When the officers arrived at the scene they found Chavonta Hibbler in the front of a black Mercedes C300. He was unresponsive and Memphis Fire Department personnel pronounced him dead on the scene. He was shot before his car crashed.
Hibbler’s three-year-old son was found in the back seat of the vehicle. The boy wasn’t shot but had crash-related injuries and was transported to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. Officers on the scene determined that Hibbler was stopped at the traffic light on Lamar when a dark-colored Honda sedan pulled alongside and opened fire. The Honda fled as the Mercedes crashed into other vehicles. One other motorist also was injured from the collision.
