March 8, 2019

HOMICIDE

Memphis Police officers from the Crump Avenue precinct responded to reports of a shooting in the 800 block of Springdale Run just north of Jackson Avenue at 12:40 a.m. on Wednesday, February 27. On arrival the officers found a male victim on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was pronounced dead on the scene by responding paramedics.

Surveillance footage at the scene showed two male blacks ran south from the scene and got into an older model (possibly 2004) silver Chevrolet Impala already occupied by another male. The Impala fled the scene and was last seen in the area of Jackson Avenue and Eva Street. Crime of the Week #9

March 1, 2019

HOMICIDE

Memphis Police officers from the North Main station were dispatched to the intersection of Alabama Avenue and Danny Thomas Blvd., just north of downtown, to check out a report of a shooting at 7:49 p.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2019. Officers arrived to find two gunshot victims inside a Chevrolet Monte Carlo. One man was pronounced dead at the scene and the second died later at the hospital.

Names are not being released at this time. Information gathered on the scene showed that suspects had fired multiple shots at the victims from a black vehicle that fled the scene. Anyone with information about this double homicide is asked to contact CrimeStoppers, (901) 528-CASH (2274).

TRAFFIC FATALITY

Officers with the Memphis Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigation Squad responded to a hit-and-run pedestrian fatality at 11:34 a.m. on August 29, 2018. The accident occurred near the intersection of Lamar and American Way, in front of a Loves Truck Stop facility. A red tractor trailer rig (see image) was turning into the truck stop when it struck pedestrian Marsha Deberry. The impact made her fall under the truck’s wheels.

Memphis Fire Department personnel were called to the scene where they pronounced Deberry dead. The 18-wheeler, with red tractor and trailer and the words “Hamburg Sud” on the side, left the scene of the accident without stopping. February 15, 2019

HOMICIDE

Officers from the Raines Precinct were flagged down by a pedestrian at 12:34 a.m. Sunday, February 10, 2019 near E. Brooks and Millbranch roads, south of I-240, south leg. The officers quickly discovered Cameo Covington, sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle and unresponsive. He was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Memphis Fire Dept. personnel arrived and pronounced Covington dead on the scene. No other details were available to police. Anyone with information about this homicide is asked to contact CrimeStoppers anonymously, (901) 274-CASH (2274).

Crime of the Week #6

February 8, 2019

HOMICIDE

Reports of gunshots about 11 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2019 brought Memphis Police officers from the Raines Precinct to the 4200 block of Graceland Drive, in the Peppertree Apartments, across from Raines-Finley Park and south of E. Raines Road in Whitehaven. When they arrived officers found a man on the ground. Victim Darius Gates had been shot and was pronounced dead.

Officers learned that a male ran from the scene toward a dark-colored SUV but no other details were available. Anyone with information on this homicide is asked to contact CrimeStoppers. Crime of the Week #5

February 1, 2019

HOMICIDE

It was just after 11 p.m. Sunday, January 13, 2019 when Memphis Police officers from the Ridgeway Precinct station answered a call about a shooting in the 5900 block of Hickory Leaf Cove, just north of East Shelby Drive in East Memphis. At the scene officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. The man, later identified as Cortez Jones, was transported to Regional One Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The responding officers determined that as Jones was walking, at least two vehicles pulled into the cove and several subjects emerged, firing multiple shots. One suspect was described as a thin black male, about five feet six inches tall and wearing a black hoodie and red jogging pants. January 25, 2019

TRAFFIC FATALITY

Shelia McGruder was driving her Ford Explorer southbound on Austin Peay Highway near Joslyn Drive at 4:15 a.m. on August 31, 2018 when another vehicle struck her from behind and caused her SUV to flip, trapping her inside. The second vehicle — described as a dark gray or silver Honda Civic — continued on its way toward Jackson Avenue and Wales Road.

The hit-and-run victim was taken to the hospital but later died of her injuries. The suspect’s car probably sustained some damage in the front end from the crash. Anyone with information that can help bring the driver to justice is asked to contact CrimeStoppers, (901) 528-CASH (2274).

HOMICIDE

Memphis Police officers from the Mt. Moriah Station were dispatched to 3875 American Way — the Fairview Inn and Suites, just south of I-240 — to check a call about a shooting and a person down. On arrival officers found a man lying on the ground and suffering from gunshot wounds.

Fernando Florez Medina was pronounced dead on the scene by arriving Memphis Fire Department personnel. Officers learned that a female black suspect had been seen standing beside Medina after he collapsed. She then was observed fleeing the scene in a blue SUV parked nearby. Crime of the Week #2

January 11, 2019

HOMICIDE

It was nearly midnight on Tuesday, January 8, 2018 when two men in a red SUV dropped Derrico Houston at the emergency room door at St. Francis Hospital, 5959 Park Avenue in East Memphis.

Houston was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound in the emergency room. No other details are known at this time. Investigators need helping solving this homicide. Call CrimeStoppers, (901) 528-CASH (2274) with tips.

Crime of the Week #1

January 4, 2019

HOMICIDE

Memphis Police officers from the Crump Blvd. station were sent to investigate a shooting call in the 1100 block of Rozelle Street, near Southern Avenue, at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, December 15, 2018. Arriving officers found a male on the ground and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim, identified as Mark Small, was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He later died from his injuries. Police have determined that Small had been involved in a physical altercation with two male blacks before he was shot. It is believed the suspects fled the scene in a gray or red pickup truck, make and model unknown.
